A Short Guide To Cape Town Beaches

Cape Town is considered by many to be the most beautiful city in South Africa and its beaches are no exception, offering something for everyone in the family. Whether you like swimming, surfing, fishing, diving or just soaking up the sun you'll find just about everything you could want in and around the Cape Peninsula. Car Rental Cape Town is here to help, so if you are looking for the right beach to go, take a look at our short guide to some of the beaches in the Cape Town area.

With Cape Town situated on the tip of the continent there are beaches on both the East and West Coasts. On the East Coast you will find the waters of the Indian Ocean, whilst if you travel up the West Coast you will be swimming in the colder waters of the Atlantic. Both coastlines offer some magnificent beaches worth visiting so take a look at what is on offer before planning a day out on the beach! Just remember these are just a few of Cape Town's stunning beaches.

As such Clifton beach is separated into 4 beaches, consisting of different coves. Named Clifton 1st, Clifton 2nd, Clifton 3rd and Clifton 4th the beaches are a favourite among the young and trendy and can be very busy over the summer months. Parking can be difficult and access is by stairs from the road above, so be prepared if you are planning a day out at Clifton over the summer months. The coves offer the beaches protection from winds so you can enjoy a lovely summer's day at the beach even if it is a bit windy elsewhere. If partying is your thing then end the evening at the popular La Med bar and nightclub, a hot-spot on summer evenings!

Possibly one of the most beautiful cities around Cape Town, Llandudno offers stunning scenery, white beaches and is a favourite with many local surfers. The beach is also a wonderful place to watch the sunset and offers amazing views, making it a great place to end the day. Situated between the other popular beaches of Clifton and Hout Bay, Llandudno is a favourite for many beach goers in Cape Town and is an excellent choice for a day out.

Fish Hoek & Clovelly

If you are looking for a quiet, relaxed beach for the family, then Fish Hoek beach is probably your best choice. Being on the East Coast it offers warmer waters as well as a safe, flat beach area with promenade that is excellent for walks. If you continue along your walk from Fish Hoek beach you will reach another smaller beach, called Clovelly, which is another good choice for a quiet family day at the beach. The beachfront offers rock pools which are great for the kids to explore and they can also grab an ice-cream from the adjacent take-aways, in a safe, relaxed environment.

Hout Bay

Hout Bay has a lot to offer, apart from its long beach that is excellent for walks and swimming. The village itself has a host of restaurants, cafes, bars and a craft market. The local inhabitants are a mixed crowd and are known in Cape Town as being more of the 'hippy' crowd. If you are lucky enough you may also catch a glimpse of whales or dolphins whilst on the beach and it's also a popular spot for horse-riding!

Sandy Bay

No list of Cape Town beaches would be complete without mentioning Sandy Bay, which is definitely not one for the faint hearted, and it Cape Town's unofficial nudist beach. It's a quiet beach, just past Llandudno and is well protected from the wind. You don't have to go nude to visit Sandy Bay, though be warned, other beach goers may be nude.

Noordhoek is a massive beach that is great for long walks as well as horse rides. The beach is also a popular surfing spot with the locals and you are sure to find some surfers catching waves on a good day out at Noordhoek. As Noordhoek is so large there no real chance of overcrowding, as with the more popular of Cape Town beaches, though it is less sheltered, being more prone to winds, so be sure to consult the weather report before planning a day out. The village of Noordhoek is also worth exploring offering a range of interesting activities for everyone in the family.
